From: http://librenix.com/?inode=2231 Starship Traders 2.1 Linux game server available Up vote Down Version 2.1.0 of the Starship Traders (SST) software for Linux is now available. Note that this is the server software for hosting a game. Requirements for hosting a game include a Linux system and a static IP address. That is, don't bother to download this software unless you have a Linux system permanently connected to the Internet with an unchanging IP address! This server supports play using web browsers, telnet clients, and the new graphical interface. If you are looking for the graphical client, check the 'downloads' list on the left. One of the new features of this version (2.1) is automatic support for the graphical client in the default installation scripts. This version of the server is incompatible with the game files for 2.0.0 and earlier versions. Do not attempt to upgrade an old, ongoing game with this new software. It is only useful in creating a completely new installation with all new games. Major new features of the game can be read about here. Earlier versions of SST 2.1 have been running at Starshiptraders.com (now offline -Ed.) for several months so, if you're a regular player there, you're already familiar with the new features. If you intend to run a game, you'll find that the installation script now supports xinetd instead of inetd. The old installation script, inetd.install.sh, is also included in the software for systems running inetd instead of xinetd. Right click here and select 'save link...' to download the Linux binary package for Starship Traders. The package is only 330K bytes in size. Then, follow the instructions on this page to install it. If something here is not clear, check the README instead. To install the game follow these steps: download the package, 'sst.210.tar', as described above unpack the tarball: tar -xvf sst.210.tar go to the software directory: cd sst-210 Start the installation script: ./install.sh Answer a few questions. You'll be prompted for the following: the directory where you wish to install the game the user id and group id under which to install (nobody/nobody works fine) the port numbers where the server should listen (80 is usually used for web servers but select a diffent port if you already have a web server installed, 2323 is suggested for telnet mode, and 666 is suggested for the graphical client) Next you'll be prompted for the root password so that the install script can update your /etc/services and /etc/xinetd.d files with the SST entries Then you'll be asked to select a user name and a password for the Sysadmin account inside the game. Needless to say, don't forget these two items. They will be very useful later! Next, you'll be asked how large your initial game000 should be, from 2000 to 2,000,000 sectors in size. Type 80000 and game000 will automatically be built as an 80,000-sector game. If everything worked properly, you'll next be prompted to log into the game with the Sysadmin account. Now you can fire up a web browser and point it toward your machine. You should be presented with a Starship Traders login form. Or, you can use your telnet client to connect to the telnet port that you selected during the installation and log in with an interactive, hot-key-enabled, text session. Slightly more elaborate instructions are available in the README file that is also included in the download package. There is a CONFIGME file as well that includes a brief description of all the admin options for configuring games, tournaments, etc. If you bring up a Starship Traders game, send email to sstlist [at] librenix.com with the URL if you'd like it added to the list of games here.
